It is in the city of Porto that the Douro River flows into the sea. On the south bank, opposite the historic centre of this city, is Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Rabelo boats arrived laden with barrels of wine from different points of the Douro region. It was here that the warehouses and offices of the Port Wine houses were established, where the wine was aged, blended, bottled and finally shipped to the rest of the world by sea. For this reason, the wine from the Douro was known as Port wine.
Discover the city of Porto, whose historical centre is also classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and the Port wine cellars in Gaia: these are fundamental to a better understanding of the history of Port wine and Douro region.
